Halverson named School of Education’s associate dean for innovation and partnerships

Rich Halverson was recently named the UW-Madison School of Education’s new associate dean for innovation and partnerships, a position he is starting on Aug. 1.

Halverson is a professor with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, and the director of the Wisconsin Collaborative Education Research Network (The Network) within the School of Education.

In his new role, Halverson will lead plans to expand the School’s current office of Education Outreach and Partnerships into a larger, more comprehensive unit. This new office, which is tentatively called Professional Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE), will focus its efforts on delivering quality professional learning, outreach and partnerships to people across the fields of education, arts and health.

Halverson will continue to lead The Network and its important work of building partnerships and transforming education in Wisconsin and beyond. This unit is home to efforts such as The Network Fellows program and the Grand Challenges initiative. The Network Fellows program connects UW-Madison graduate students and partners around Wisconsin to help organizations utilize resources and expertise from the School of Education. Grand Challenges, meanwhile, aims to ignite innovation by supporting cross-disciplinary teams that develop projects displaying the potential to transform lives.

“Professor Halverson has an established and well recognized track record as an exemplary scholar who has also collaboratively developed and led innovative programs in the School of Education,” says School of Education Dean Diana Hess, who holds the Karen A. Falk Distinguished Chair of Education. “I am quite confident he will do a great job in this new role.”

Halverson’s research aims to bring the learning sciences to the world of educational leadership and interactive media. He is the founder of the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning project and was a co-founder and co-director the Games + Learning + Society research center. Halverson is a former high school teacher and administrator, and earned a master’s in philosophy and a Ph.D. in the learning sciences from Northwestern University.

Halverson also is co-author of “Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology: The Digital Revolution and Schooling in America,” and of “Mapping Leadership: The Tasks that Matter for Improving Teaching and Learning in Schools.”

“My role will be to facilitate processes that invite our world-leading faculty, staff and students to turn their best ideas into field-defining research and engaging programs for the arts, education and health,” Halverson says of his role as associate dean. “A central goal for my office will be to work with the School of Education to facilitate dynamic, productive networks that result in new programs and initiatives with the campus, state, nation and world.”    

Associate Dean Julie Mead conducted a year-long assessment of the School’s outreach efforts and helped identify opportunities to build on and expand its strengths. A search is underway for a director of Professional Learning and Community Engagement, while Beth Giles will continue to lead the education outreach side of PLACE.
