Date
Monday, October 09, 2017
Time
3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Location
259 Educational Sciences
Description
Amy Noelle Parks will be delivering a presentation titled, "Centering Young Children's Perspectives in Classroom Research."

ParksParks tells the stories of two children who had quite different experiences in mathematics classrooms, despite having the same teachers, classmates, and curricula.

The work suggests a need for more classroom research that decenters the experiences of teachers and seeks to explicitly understand the schooling experiences of children who participate in whole group conversations rarely or in ways that disrupt accepted norms of engagement.

Parks, a candidate for the Gulbrandsen Chair in Early Childhood Education, is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University and author of "Exploring Mathematics Through Play in Early Childhood Classrooms." She works in the fields of early childhood and mathematics education, and her research is concerned with equity issues related to young children’s experiences of schooling, mathematical play, and representations of children  and families in research.
