Description

wiscape summit imageOver the past several decades, Wisconsin has seen tremendous growth in its populations of color, and Milwaukee, its largest metropolitan area, has transitioned to a majority-minority city. As the state’s regional demographics continue to shift, many higher education institutions have committed to the goal of attracting, supporting, retaining, and graduating increasingly diverse student bodies from traditionally marginalized backgrounds.

Given the rapid growth in the Hispanic community in particular, a number of these institutions have begun actively pursuing the status of “Hispanic-Serving Institution” (HSI), which requires that at least 25 percent of the student body be Hispanic. But more important than enrollment data or a federal designation, it is imperative for all of Wisconsin’s colleges and universities to connect underrepresented students to opportunities and support them along their educational journeys.

This one-day summit, hosted by the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) and the six member institutions of the HSI Network of Wisconsin, will provide a forum for students, community members, and higher education professionals to connect and collaboratively explore how we can create the conditions necessary for all underrepresented students to thrive on our campuses.

Dr. Gina A. Garcia, an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh and the author of Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions, will be the keynote speaker for this event. The day will also include panel discussions, breakout workshops, and opportunities for dialogue and connection.

We hope you can join us on the beautiful campus of Alverno College on February 21, 2020.
