Aaron Kinard is an undergraduate student studying Education Studies and History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a McNair Scholar, he has developed a research study under the co-mentorship of Dr. Linn Posey-Maddox and Dr. Walter Stern that examines how Black students who formerly attended rural, predominantly white high schools in Wisconsin describe and understand their racialized experiences. Through semi-structured interviews, the study seeks to examine how participants describe the racial climate of their former school, how their racialized experiences both in and outside of school shaped their sense of belonging to the school and community, and how their experiences and environment shaped their perceptions of Blackness. Aaron aspires to pursue a PhD where he can continue to conduct research about spatial and racial experiences and inequities in rural schools and communities in the United States.
